Installing a video recorder/camera in your car or truck makes very good sense. It could save you thousands of dollars in the unfortunate event of your vehicle being involved in an accident. You will have visual and documented evidence of exactly what happened just prior to a collision. You can show where another driver was at fault.

Price: The price of the dashcam is usually a guide to the performance quality and range of features provided. Unless you are definitely looking to buy the lowest priced unit, we suggest that you take the time to check through a few of kits we have listed to get an idea of what is available and then find the dashcam that fits your specification.

G Sensor: All these dash cams have a G sensor locking device that operates automatically when there is a sudden stop or violent move of your vehicle. This ensures that the video footage recorded immediately before the incident cannot be overwritten or lost.

Automatic Filming: Parking protection and motion detection start filming automatically if your vehicle has movement around it when stationery. These facilities require the dashcam recorder to be hardwired into the main power source (via the fuse box for instance) or a separate battery. Hardwire kits supplied by most dash and reverse camera sellers include a safety feature to ensure your vehicle battery is not depleted too far.

WDR Technology: WDR technology vastly improves the quality of the video output and is becoming increasingly common in vehicle backup and dash cameras.

Loop Recording: Loop recording means that when the micro card is full the recording will overwrite the oldest data so that you always have recent footage available.

Image Capture: With some cameras you can capture still images as well as video footage of events or scenes during your journey. There are digital magazines that publish unusual or dramatic traffic moments seen on dashcams.

WiFi Transfer: Although WiFi allows the transfer from in-car recorder to other digital devices such as phones and computers the download can be rather slow. For a quick transfer, such as the most recent 2 minutes' footage, it is OK, but for a longer journey recording it is better to remove the micro card and use a card player (most SD card suppliers include one with their card).

We have listed the best-selling front view cameras and dual front and backup camera systems and detailed their operating features so that you can select the kit that best suits you.

Crosstour CR900

1080P FHD Front and Rear Dual Lens Dash Cam

What we like

The Crosstour CR900 is a very popular dual camera system mainly because of its high-quality images from both front and rear cameras. Also mounting the rear facing camera inside the car is attractive – no need to drill holes anywhere. And there is ample evidence of the customer service backup being excellent.

This kit includes most of what you expect from a dual dash and reversing camera although to log position and time on the footage you will require a separate GPS antenna. The other features include loop recording, wide angle fields of view and motion detection (you would be advised to buy a hard wire kit for this to avoid drain on your battery), and excellent night vision.

But there is one big problem and that is that the small screen on the front dashcam is hardly big enough for viewing what is behind when backing up the vehicle – especially if the front camera is mounted behind the rearview mirror.

Our conclusion

So, if you want a very good recording of what is in front and what is behind you when driving this is for you. However, if you need an aid to reversing your vehicle you might want to re-consider.
